Orange and Vanilla Sugar Cookies

Holidays are coming around, so I’m gearing up for the large quantities of thematically linked baking.

First order up : Orange and Vanilla Sugar cookies! Easy recipe that makes lots of cookies, ideal to share in groups.

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 cups white sugar
3 eggs
2 tablespoon orange zest
3/8 cup orange juice (juice of about 2 oranges, strained to remove pulp)
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt


1. In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar.

2. Stir in the orange juice (freshly squeezed and strained to remove pulp), vanilla extract and orange zest.

3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time.

4. You want a nice smooth result when all the eggs are added.

5. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt, stir into the creamed mixture.

6. The mix will gather into a slightly sticky dough.

7. Transfer to a bowl, cover in plastic wrap and allow to rest overnight in the fridge.

8. Pre-heat the oven to 350F. Line some baking sheets with parchment paper.

Take part of the dough out of the fridge and roll to about 1/4 inch thick (play with the thickness, see what you prefer) and stamp out your cookies.

9. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until the underside if just barely golden. Allow to rest on the baking sheet while you roll out the next batch, so the residual heat finishes the cooking. Then remove to a cooling rack.

10. Enjoy the cookies!
